“Huntsville Heroes” is a free outdoor Photo Exhibit on the grounds of the Samuel Walker Houston Museum on 10th St. in Huntsville, Texas The exhibit shares little known facts about six patriots who helped further education, opportunity and achievement for Black Texans.
HOW IT ALL BEGAN... In 1921, college instructor John Wesley Wilson and his wife Amarintha Kittrell Wilson transferred 2 acres of land (639 Rosenwall Road, Huntsville TX 77340) to the Huntsville Texas Independent School District so primary-age children of color in Huntsville Texas could get a quality education...

The story of John Wesley Wilson & Amarintha Kittrell Wilson: their 1915 purchase of 2 acres to create the first publicly funded school in Walker County ...and how this small rural Rosenwald School galvanized and empowered an under-served community.
Professor Samuel W. Houston (1864-1945) was John Wesley Wilson’s cousin. Prof. Houston built several Huntsville educational institutions ..some with Rosenwald Fund assistance. See more at the Samuel Walker Museum's page here.

A primary goal of the festival is to raise money to restore Rosenwald Acres as a gathering place for wholesome family gatherings and to renovate the 130 yr old Kittrell Wilson Cemetery access road and grounds where the school's founders (and many of the alumni and caregivers) are buried.
